Your First 7 Days
Your first week is about safety, shelter and staying connected. Don’t worry about getting everything perfect – these are the things that matter most right now.
Days 1 - 2 · Arrive and settle
- Confirm where you are staying and how to contact the people helping you.
- Get a local SIM card - airports and supermarkets sell them. Almost everything else needs an Australian number.
-
Save these numbers: 000 (emergency), 131 450 (free interpreter), and your country's embassy or consulate.
- Rest. Jet lag and stress are real - be kind to yourself.
Days 3 - 4 · Money and ID
- Open a bank account (bring your passport - within 6 weeks of arrival most banks need no other ID).
- Apply for your Tax File Number (TFN) online — it's free on the ATO website. You need it to work and to avoid paying extra tax.
- Take photos of all your important documents and email them to yourself.
Days 5 - 7 · Get oriented
- Walk or ride around your suburb. Find the supermarket, pharmacy, doctor, library and train or bus stop.
- Visit your local library - it's free, has internet, and staff can help you find local services.
- Create your myGov account and start your Medicare enrolment if your visa is eligible.
- Look up your local community group on Migrants Hub - even one familiar conversation helps.
How you might feel
Many new arrivals feel excited one hour and homesick the next. This is normal. If you are struggling emotionally, you are not alone - free multilingual support exists. Ask your GP, or see our Health and Medicare guide.
